My BBC player toold does not work, what can i do to fix it?
(I use Alcatel thomson ADSL modem)
A thing that can fix the problem with BBC iPlayer is to set up port forwarding. The ports that have to be opened are: 80, 443, 1947, 1948, 4000, 5000 and 8888 for BBC player.
The first thing you need to do for the port forwarding is to set a static IP on your computer. Here are the instructions if you are using Windows XP/Vista:
1. Go to Start Menu/Control Panel 2. Open 'Network Connections' ('Network and Sharing Center' if you are using Windows Vista) 3. Right click on your Local Area Connection and select Properties 4. In the General tab, please highlight 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)' ('Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4)' if Windows Vista) and click on the button Properties bellow 5. Select the option "Use the following IP address" and enter the following details:
IP address: 192.168.1.8
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: (modem/router ip address)
Preffered DNS: (write here your dns given by your isp)
Alternative DNS: (write here your second dns address given by your isp)
Click "OK" and then "OK" again or 'Close'.
To set a static IP on a Mac, please follow these steps:
1. Click on the Apple menu on the top-left corner of the screen and select System Preferences. 2. Click on the Network icon located on the Internet & Network section. 3. After the Network Preferences window opens, click the pop-up menu next to Show: and select Built-in Ethernet 4. Click on the TCP/IP button. 5. Click on the pop-up menu next to Configure IPv4: and select Manually. 6. Enter in the IP Address, Subnet Mask and Router (sometimes called Gateway) IP address: 192.168.1.8
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.254
Note: If the Subnet Mask: and Router are not editable, click on the PPPoE button and uncheck Connect using PPPoE. Then go back to the TCP/IP button.
7. In the DNS Servers: box, type 87.194.0.51 and 87.194.0.67
After you set the IP on the computer you need to create a port forwarding rule for the following ports: 1947, 1948, 4000, 5000 and 8888. To create a rule you need to do the following:
1. Go to the modem configuration page by typing "192.168.1.254" ( or any other default ip addresses) of your modem in your web browser
2. find -> "Game and Application Sharing" -> "Create a game or application" link. ( if there is no Game and Application Sharing, search for port forwarding)
3. For "Protocol" select "Any", under "Port Range" in the upper box enter "1947", in the lower box enter "1948", under "Translate To ..." enter "1947", on the "Trigger Protocol" leave "Any" and the "Trigger Port" should be blank. Click on "Add". For port 4000, 5000 and 8888 you need to add them separately. Everything is the same, the only difference is that under "Port Range" in both boxes and on the "Translate To ..." you should enter same numbers.
5. Enter "iPlayer" for "New Name" and click "Apply". The page will return that there is an error and the name is in use but the rule will be created.
Once the rule is created click on "Assign game or application to a local network device" and do the following:
1. For "Game or Application" select "HTTP" from the drop down menu, for "Device" you have to select "User-defined' and in the new box enter the static IP: 192.168.1.8, check the log box and click "Add".
2. For "Game or Application" select "HTTPs" from the drop down menu, for "Device" you have to select "User-defined' and in the new box enter the static IP: 192.168.1.8, check the log box and click "Add"
3. For "Game or Application" select "iPlayer" (the rule you just created) from the drop down menu, for "Device" you have to select "User-defined' and in the new box enter the static IP: 192.168.1.8, check the log box and click "Add".
Port 443 is in use by default so you should stop it. You need to do the following:
1. Go to Start -> Run -> cmd press "Enter".
2. Type "telnet 192.168.1.254" press "Enter"
3. Authenticate with the username and password (by default Administrator and blank for password)
4. Once you are loged type:
"service system ifdelete name=HTTPs group=wan" and press "Enter".
5. Type "saveall" press "Enter".
6. Type "exit" press "Enter".
its all, BBC player must be working now.
